IIT Guwahati develops mitigation for biomass burning and marine oil spills.

• IIT Guwahati researchers have developed a silica nanoparticle-coated cotton fabric that can separate oil from an oil-water mixture.

• The nanoparticles are made from rice husk, an agricultural waste, and coated on the fabric to make it water-repellent and oil-absorbent.

• The innovation aims to convert waste biomass into a useful product by producing sustainable microalgae biofuel from wastewater and microalgal biomass using hydrothermal liquefaction and reduce oil spills.
