  • India’s ethanol production from food grains like maize and rice has increased from 37.4% to 51% in the current year. Total ethanol production till June 9 was 357.12 crore liters, with 181.38 crore liters from grains and 175.74 crore liters from sugar.
  • Maize contributed 110.82 crore liters, with the rest from damaged foodgrain and surplus rice.
  • The shift aims to reduce the reliance on water-intensive sugarcane. India’s goal is to achieve E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend) by 2025-26.
