Application
Description Honeywell and GranBio Technologies are collaborating to produce carbon-neutral sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biomass residues. GranBio’s AVAP process converts forest and agricultural waste into low-carbon sugars, which are then turned into SAF using Honeywell's ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) technology. This partnership aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation by creating SAF with net-zero lifecycle emissions. GranBio’s U.S. demonstration plant is expected to produce 2 million gallons of SAF annually by 2026.
Pathway Description: The process involves using GranBio’s AVAP technology to convert forest and agricultural residues into low-cost, low-carbon-intensity sugars. These sugars are then fermented into ethanol, which is converted into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using Honeywell’s ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) technology. This process reduces greenhouse gas emissions to net zero on a total lifecycle basis compared to petroleum-based jet fuel. The technology also allows for the production of biochemicals alongside SAF, providing additional value from biomass feedstocks.
