Application
Description The project focuses on experimenting with spineless fodder cactus to produce biogas in Bundelkhand, India. Researchers from ICAR and ICARDA are testing cactus slurry as a sustainable feedstock, which has shown up to 61% methane content in small-scale trials. The cactus serves multiple purposes, including fodder, food, fiber, fertilizer, and fuel. The initiative aims to enhance renewable energy production and improve farmers' income by utilizing cactus in arid regions.
Pathway Description: The process involves anaerobic digestion, where organic materials like cactus slurry and cow dung are broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. Initially, cow dung is used to kick-start the process, and then cactus slurry is gradually added. This biological process produces biogas, primarily methane, as a renewable energy source. The process helps in utilizing cactus waste for energy, fodder, and fertilizer.
