Application
Description Mitsui Chemicals' subsidiary, Prime Polymer, has become the first company in Japan to commercially produce and ship biomass polypropylene (PP). This bio-based PP, made from bio-based hydrocarbons sourced from Neste Corp., is certified through the ISCC PLUS mass balance method. The project supports Mitsui Chemicals' goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 through bio-based materials and chemical recycling. Prime Polymer aims to contribute to a circular economy and a recycling-oriented society.
Pathway Description: The process used in this project involves the mass balance method, where bio-based hydrocarbons are sourced from Neste Corp. These hydrocarbons are integrated into the production of biomass polypropylene (PP) at Mitsui Chemicals' Osaka Works. The mass balance method ensures that the amount of bio-based content in the final product is tracked and verified. The bio-based PP is then certified under the ISCC PLUS standard, ensuring sustainability and traceability in the supply chain for plastics and chemical derivatives.
