Description This project provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in biomass torrefaction, a thermochemical process that enhances biomass quality by heating it in an inert atmosphere. The study focuses on innovations in torrefaction reactor design, energy densification, and the potential of torrefied biomass as a pre-treatment for further conversion processes. It also addresses technological challenges and explores novel applications of torrefied biomass. The article emphasizes the importance of using sustainable biomass to reduce operational costs and environmental impact.
Pathway Description: The process used in this project is biomass torrefaction, a thermochemical process where biomass is slowly heated to around 300°C in an inert or reduced atmosphere. This process improves the physical, elemental, and proximate characteristics of biomass, reducing its moisture content and increasing its energy density. The result is torrefied biomass, which is more efficient as a fuel. The study also explores advancements in reactor design and the use of torrefied biomass as a pre-treatment for further conversion processes.
