Application

  • Replacement for resins and fillers: Lignin is used as a partial substitute for phenol-formaldehyde resin in plywood glue and other board products.
  • Bio-based chemicals and materials: The project enables the production of bio-plastics, adhesives, composites, and chemicals from lignin and sugars.

Description

This project, led by FPInnovations, focuses on developing processes to extract and utilize lignin from wood to create high-value products. Key processes like LignoForce and TMP-Bio separate lignin from black liquor and biomass, producing high-quality lignin and sugars for various applications. These include replacing phenolic resins in plywood, producing bio-based adhesives, composites, and chemicals, and creating bio-plastics. The project aims to enhance the profitability and resilience of the Canadian forest industry through innovative lignin utilization.

Pathway Description:

The project uses two main processes: LignoForce, which extracts high-quality lignin from kraft black liquor by sparging with oxygen and acidifying with CO2. TMP-Bio involves thermomechanical refining and enzymatic hydrolysis to separate lignin and sugars from wood. These processes enable the production of bio-based products like adhesives, composites, and bio-plastics. They focus on enhancing lignin's value for sustainable applications.
