Biomass Briquette Plants to Combat Pollution from Punjab and Haryana

• Every year, 22 million tonnes of rice straw is burnt in Punjab and Haryana, contributing to severe pollution and elevated PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels in Delhi and NCR.
• The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a program to set up biomass briquette and pellet manufacturing plants to reduce stubble burning, provide income to farmers, and combat pollution.
• Converting agro residue into biomass pellets for use in coal-fired power plants reduces emissions, improves energy efficiency, and helps mitigate air pollution.
