- Balrampur Chini Mills, a sugar company, has received approval from its board to enter the bioplastics industry by manufacturing Polylactic Acid (PLA), to be used for the production of bioplastic.
- Balrampur Chini plans to construct a PLA factory with a global-scale capacity of 75,000 tonnes per annum. The raw material for PLA production is sugar, which is readily available at the company’s existing sugar plants.
- PLA is a bio-based and biodegradable material that can be used to produce bioplastic, offering a sustainable substitute for conventional plastics in various applications. The production of PLA in the US and Thailand is known to produce 68 percent lower greenhouse gases, consume 65 percent less energy than the production of conventional plastics, and is toxin-free.
- This move is expected to enhance the company’s market presence and contribute to the growth of the bioplastics industry in India.
